Landscaping in Lexington, WA means working with river soil. Lexington stretches along the west bank of the Cowlitz north of Kelso and Longview, with State Route 411 running through it beside the river, Beacon Hill on its southwest edge, and Castle Rock about 8 miles up the road. At about 33 feet above sea level, the neighborhood is flat, diked, and much of it was built within the last few decades.

That makes Lexington different from its neighbors. Instead of century-old yards or steep hillsides, we see 1990s and 2000s landscapes that have hit middle age: sprinkler systems with worn heads, foundation shrubs that outgrew their beds, and lawns that thin out on sandy spots each August. Bogar Landscaping is 25 to 30 minutes away in Woodland, and Lexington sits well inside our Cowlitz County service area for renovation, irrigation and lawn work.

Lexington's Newer Homes and Maturing Landscapes

Lexington first appeared as its own census-designated place in 2020, with 3,834 residents on about 1.4 square miles. It has the newest housing of the Longview and Kelso communities we cover. City-Stats' summary of 2023 Census survey data gives Lexington a median build year of 1993, against 1961 in Kelso, and shows about 80 percent of homes lived in by the people who own them.

Landscapes installed with those houses are now 20 to 30 years old. Common requests:

  • Overgrown foundation plantings. Shrubs set close together for a quick fill now touch the siding and cover windows.
  • Arborvitae rows that got away. Privacy screens planted along back fences are taller and wider than anyone planned.
  • Original sprinkler systems. Heads that no longer pop up, valves that stick, and zones laid out for a younger, sunnier yard.
  • Tired lawns. Thin turf on sandy spots, thatch buildup, and moss where trees now shade the grass.
  • Patios and walks that settled or never quite drained.

A full renovation does not have to mean starting over. Often the right move is keeping the trees and hardscape, then replacing beds, irrigation and lawn around them.

Lexington Soils: River Silt, Sand, Fill and Terrace Clay

Soil survey points around Lexington show a patchwork. Much of the flat ground is Clato silt loam and Newberg fine sandy loam, both laid down by the Cowlitz. Clato is well drained with moderate permeability, and the soil survey notes some areas flood unless protected. Mixed in are pockets of disturbed, extremely gravelly sand, which is placed fill rather than native soil. Toward Beacon Hill, the ground rises onto Kelso and Olympic silt loams with clay-rich subsoils.

Each behaves differently in a yard:

Soil How it acts What it needs
Newberg fine sandy loam Drains fast, dries out fast Regular summer watering, compost, mulch
Clato silt loam Drains well, holds moisture better Aeration where it compacts
Gravelly sand fill Rocky, droughty, hard to dig Imported topsoil before sod or beds
Kelso silt loam (terrace edges) Water perches over subsoil in winter Drainage and raised beds

Summers here are dry. Longview's NOAA normals, just down the road, average 0.63 inches of rain for July and 0.97 for August. WSU puts the intake rate of sandy loam at about 3 inches per hour, against about half an inch for clay loam, so water soaks in quickly but the soil holds less of it. Sandy Lexington lawns usually need more frequent summer watering than lawns on Longview's clay, and compost worked into the soil helps them hold moisture.

Levees, Creeks and Flood Protection in Lexington

Lexington depends on the Cowlitz levees and has its own diking district. In 2019 that district joined Cowlitz County, Castle Rock and the Longview and Kelso diking districts in paying the Army Corps of Engineers to survey the river. Water also comes from the hills behind the neighborhood: in 2023 the Lexington Flood Control Zone District moved into the final phase of rebuilding the South Fork McCorkle Creek detention structure to improve flood protection for homes below it.

What that means for yard work:

  • Leave levees and district ditches alone. If your lot backs onto a levee or drainage ditch, check with the diking district before planting, digging or placing anything on it.
  • Plan drain outlets for high water. During the December 2025 storms, flood warnings went out for the Cowlitz at Kelso and Castle Rock. A yard drain that empties toward the river needs to work when the river is up.
  • Permits run through the county. Lexington is unincorporated, so retaining walls, grading and drainage tie-ins answer to Cowlitz County, not a city. Thresholds vary, so check before work is designed.

01

Landscape Design & Installation in Lexington, WA

Landscape Design & Installation in Lexington

Most Lexington redesigns start from a 1990s or 2000s builder layout. We keep the trees and hardscape worth keeping, then redraw beds, lawn edges and paths so the yard fits how you use it now.

Garden Bed Design & Installation, Planting & Garden Maintenance in Lexington

Foundation beds in Lexington were often planted tight to fill space fast, and 25 years later they are crowded. We remove or relocate overgrown shrubs, work compost into sandy soil and replant with mature sizes in mind.

Native Plant Landscaping & Rain Garden Installation in Lexington

Lexington's sandy river soils often infiltrate well enough for a rain garden, unlike the clay across the river. We test the spot first, size the garden to the roof, and plant natives like red-flowering currant and Oregon grape on the dry edge.

New Construction Landscaping in Lexington

Newer Lexington lots can finish with gravelly fill where topsoil should be. We grade, bring in soil so roots have something to grow in, set irrigation, then install sod, shrubs and bark dust.

Landscape Lighting Installation in Lexington

On Lexington's flat lots, lighting is mostly about front walks, driveway edges and backyard patios. We add low-voltage fixtures to existing landscapes without tearing out beds, routing wire under sod or bark.

Mulching, Bark & Bark Dust Installation in Lexington

Sandy Lexington beds dry out fast in July and August. A fresh 2 to 3 inch layer of fir or hemlock bark dust slows that loss and keeps weeds down. We clear and edge beds first and keep bark away from siding.

02

Lawn Care & Lawn Renovation in Lexington, WA

Lawn Care & Maintenance, Lawn Mowing & Edging in Lexington

Lexington lawns on sandy soil stress first in summer heat. We mow higher in July and August, keep blades sharp, edge walks and driveways, and keep an eye out for dry spots that point to a sprinkler problem.

Sod Installation, Sod Laying & Lawn Installation in Lexington

Sod on Lexington's fast-draining soil needs soil underneath that holds some water. On gravelly fill or thin sand we add topsoil before laying sod, then set you up with a watering plan for the first weeks.

Lawn Aeration, Dethatching, Overseeding & Lawn Restoration in Lexington

Many Lexington lawns are 20 to 30 years old and carrying thatch. We dethatch, core aerate and overseed thin areas with a turf-type perennial ryegrass blend, which brings an aging lawn back without tearing it out.

Lawn Moss Removal & Moss Treatment in Lexington

Moss in Lexington lawns usually shows up where trees planted with the house now shade the grass, or on the slower-draining terrace edges. We dethatch it out, aerate, overseed, and prune for light where it helps.

Artificial Turf Installation & Dog Run Installation in Lexington

Lexington's sandy soil drains well under artificial turf, which makes a dog run here simpler than in clay country. We still build a compacted crushed-rock base and keep the turf edge clean against beds and fences.

03

Drainage, Grading & Erosion Control in Lexington, WA

Landscape Drainage Solutions & French Drain Installation in Lexington

Drainage problems in Lexington tend to be spot problems: a low corner on the terrace edge, a side yard where downspouts dump, or a patio graded the wrong way. We fix the specific spot with a French drain or regrade.

Downspout Drainage & Drainage Catch Basin Installation in Lexington

Downspouts on many Lexington homes still splash onto the same bed they did when the house was new. Because much of the soil here drains well, we can lead roof water into a gravel infiltration trench or a dry creek bed a safe distance from the foundation.

Yard Grading, Regrading & Landscape Erosion Control in Lexington

Lexington is flat, but backfill that settled around a 1990s foundation can leave the ground sloping back toward the house. We regrade so water moves away, then reseed or sod the disturbed area.

Gravel Driveway Restoration in Lexington

Gravel parking pads beside Lexington driveways thin out and grow weeds. We scrape off the weeds, level the pad, top it with new crushed gravel and set steel edging where gravel meets lawn.

04

Hardscaping, Pavers & Retaining Walls in Lexington, WA

Hardscaping & Paver Installation in Lexington

A paver patio is a common way to add outdoor room to a Lexington backyard, often extending or replacing a small slab. We excavate, compact a crushed-rock base in layers and lay pavers pitched away from the house.

Paver Patio Repair & Leveling in Lexington

Pavers in Lexington settle where downspouts drain under them or the original base was skimpy. We pull up the low section, add and compact new base rock, redirect the water, and set the pavers back with fresh joint sand.

Retaining Wall Installation & Retaining Wall Repair in Lexington

Most Lexington lots need only low walls, but homes on the Beacon Hill side have real grade changes. A short wall here still gets drain rock and a perforated pipe behind it, and on flatter lots we build seat walls and raised beds.

05

Irrigation & Sprinkler Systems in Lexington, WA

Irrigation & Sprinkler Installation, Drip Irrigation Installation & Conversion in Lexington

Sandy soil and dry Augusts make irrigation worth getting right in Lexington. We design new systems or redo old ones with matched heads, drip for beds, and run times set for soil that takes water fast but holds little.

Sprinkler System Repair, Sprinkler Leak Detection & Repair in Lexington

Lexington systems installed with the house are now decades old. We replace stuck heads and leaking valves, repair broken lines, and rezone areas where trees have turned sunny lawn into shade.

06

Yard Cleanup, Clearing & Invasive Plant Removal in Lexington, WA

Yard Cleanup & Seasonal Maintenance, Leaf Removal, Fall Cleanup & Storm Debris Cleanup in Lexington

Trees planted with Lexington's newer homes now drop real leaf loads. In fall we rake and blow out lawns and beds, trim spent perennials, and remove storm debris after winter wind.

Overgrown Yard Cleanup & Restoration, Brush Clearing & Removal in Lexington

Back corners and fence lines on Lexington lots can fill with brush and volunteer trees. We cut the growth by hand and pull roots with our mini excavator when it fits through the gate, leaving ground ready to plant.

Blackberry Bush Removal & English Ivy Removal in Lexington

Blackberry moves into Lexington yards from riverside brush and vacant edges. We cut the canes, dig out the root crowns, and remove any English ivy creeping in from neighboring lots, then haul it all away.

Pre-Sale Landscape Cleanup in Lexington

Lexington homes sell to buyers who expect a yard in good order. Before listing, we cut shrubs back from windows, top up the bark dust, give the lawn a clean cut, and fix sprinkler or drainage issues an inspection would catch.

07

Trees, Shrubs & Hedges in Lexington, WA

Shrub & Hedge Trimming and Privacy Hedge Installation in Lexington

Arborvitae and laurel screens planted along Lexington fence lines when the houses were new are now big. We bring them back to a size that is easy to keep up, and fill gaps with young arborvitae.

Tree Trimming & Pruning in Lexington

Trees planted when Lexington's homes were new are now crowding roofs and shading lawns. We prune for structure and clearance, lift low limbs over walks and drives, and remove deadwood.

08

Commercial Landscaping in Lexington, WA

Commercial Landscaping & Maintenance in Lexington

HOA common areas, shared entries and small business lots in Lexington need mowing, bed care and irrigation checks. We handle routine maintenance and the repairs that come with aging landscapes.

Why Choose Us

Why Lexington Homeowners Call Bogar Landscaping

1993
Median year homes built

Renewing 30-Year-Old Landscapes

Half of Lexington's homes went up in 1993 or later, so most of their original landscapes are now crowded, worn or outgrown. We renovate in stages if you prefer: beds and shrubs one season, irrigation and lawn the next, keeping the healthy trees and hardscape you already paid for.

3 in./hr
Sandy loam intake (WSU)

Irrigation Matched to River Soil

WSU Extension rates sandy loam at about 3 inches of water intake per hour, six times faster than clay loam. Water soaks in quickly and drains past the roots sooner, so Lexington lawns on sand need more frequent watering than lawns on clay. We set zones and run times to fit the soil, use drip for beds, and add compost where sand will not hold water.

FAQ

Lexington Landscaping FAQs

Do you work in Lexington and Beacon Hill?

Yes. We work throughout Lexington along State Route 411 and up into Beacon Hill on its southwest side. We also cover Kelso, Longview and Castle Rock; see our Kelso landscaping page for the city side of the river.

Why does my Lexington lawn dry out so fast in summer?

Much of Lexington sits on sandy and gravelly river soil that takes water in fast but holds little of it, and July and August get little rain. Watering a bit more often in summer, working compost into thin areas, mowing higher and making sure every sprinkler head reaches its zone all help.

Who do I check with before building a wall or drain in Lexington?

Lexington is unincorporated, so Cowlitz County handles permits for walls, grading and drainage. If your lot is near a levee or district ditch, check with the diking district too. Utility locates through 811 come first on every job we dig.

How far is Lexington from your base?
