If you are considering artificial turf installation in Woodland, WA, the turf you pick matters less than the ground it sits on. Synthetic grass rolled over soft soil or clay turns lumpy, holds puddles and smells by the second winter. Built over a compacted, draining gravel base, it stays flat and usable through months of rain.

Bogar Landscaping installs artificial turf and dog runs for homes across Clark and Cowlitz County: shady backyards where grass gave up, side yards that never dry, and the muddy track your dog wears along the fence. The same crew that builds our gravel paths, drain lines and steel edging builds the base, so the part you cannot see gets the most attention.

Artificial Turf Installation in Woodland, WA

A turf installation is mostly excavation and base work. A typical job includes:

  • Removing the old lawn and soft soil so the base sits on firm ground.
  • Grading so water moves away from the house and toward a safe outlet.
  • Filter fabric between native soil and gravel, the same way we separate soil from drain rock behind block walls.
  • A crushed rock base, spread and compacted in layers, with a fine top layer screeded smooth.
  • Edging. Steel edging or a hard border such as pavers holds the perimeter so the turf cannot creep.
  • Turf, seams and infill. Rolls are laid with the grain running one way, seams joined, edges secured, and infill brushed in so the blades stand up.

Where a yard sits wet all winter, we add a perforated drain under the base, tied into a French drain or yard drain outlet.

Dog Run Installation

A good dog run drains fast, cleans easily and never turns into a January mud pit. We build three kinds:

  • Pet turf over drain rock. Turf with a flow-through backing laid on a free-draining rock base, so urine and rinse water drain down instead of pooling.
  • Gravel runs. Rounded or crushed rock inside steel edging, like the gravel paths in our photos. Cheap to build, easy to top up.
  • Slab paver runs. Pavers set in gravel along a side yard, hosed off in minutes. Our paver and hardscaping crew sets these.

We also plan for a hose bib within reach and a shaded corner. Washington's Department of Ecology names bacteria as the most common pollutant in state waters and pet waste as a likely major source in urban watersheds, so we slope runs away from storm drains, ditches and creeks.

Signs Turf or a Dog Run Makes Sense

  • Grass will not grow in the shade. OSU notes turf will likely struggle on less than 4 hours of direct sun a day. If moss removal keeps failing, a surface that needs no sun may be the answer.
  • Your dog has worn a path to mud along the fence or in front of the back door.
  • A side yard or slope is a pain to mow and never looks good.
  • Muddy paws all winter are coming straight into the house.
  • You want a play area that is usable the day after rain.

How We Build Turf Areas and Dog Runs

  1. Call 811. Washington law requires notice to the utility locate service at least two full business days before excavation, so we request locates before digging.
  2. Excavate and haul. Sod, roots and soft soil come out.
  3. Grade and drain. Shape the subgrade toward an outlet and add a drain line if the soil holds water.
  4. Fabric and base. Lay filter fabric, then crushed rock compacted in layers.
  5. Edge. Set steel edging or a paver border.
  6. Surface. Lay and seam turf and brush in infill, or spread the gravel or set the pavers.
  7. Rinse and walk through. Flush the surface, check that it drains, and show you how to care for it.

Natural Grass vs. Artificial Turf vs. Gravel Dog Runs

Surface Winter Summer Upkeep
Natural grass Mud where dogs run; moss in shade Needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week, per OSU Mowing, feeding, reseeding
Artificial turf Clean and usable if the base drains Can get very hot in direct sun Blow off debris, brush, rinse pet areas
Gravel dog run Drains fast, no mud Stays cooler than turf Rake and top up every few years
Slab pavers in gravel Firm footing, hoses clean Holds heat less than turf Occasional rinse and weed pull

Heat is the trade-off with turf. Penn State researchers report infill synthetic turf surfaces measured as high as 93°C (about 199°F) on a 37°C (about 99°F) day, and found watering cooled the surface only briefly. For dogs, we steer turf toward areas with afternoon shade.

Building for Woodland's Wet Winters

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Longview show about 48 inches of precipitation a year and 7.14 inches in December alone. Turf sheds none of that. Every drop has to go down through the backing, through the gravel and into the ground below.

That is where Woodland yards get tricky. Much of the lowland toward the Columbia sits on Caples silty clay loam, with slow permeability and a winter water table 1.5 to 2.5 feet down from November through April. On soil like that, a gravel base with no outlet becomes a bathtub. We test how the ground drains and, where it is slow, pipe water out to a safe outlet. Roof water gets routed away first with downspout drainage.

What Affects the Cost of Artificial Turf Installation in Woodland, WA

A national cost guide put artificial grass installation at about $5 to $12.50 per square foot (2022 data). What moves your number:

  • Area and shape. Curves and lots of cuts add labor and waste.
  • Excavation and haul-off. Removing old sod and soft soil is a big part of the job.
  • Drainage. A drain line under the base adds cost on clay.
  • Turf grade. Pet turf with flow-through backing costs more than basic landscape turf.
  • Edging and access. Steel edging, paver borders and narrow side gates all matter.
  • Run surface. Gravel runs cost far less than turf.

Locate before we dig

Excavation Done the Right Way

A turf base means digging, and Washington's dig law requires a utility locate at least two full business days before excavation. We request one before every job, then dig out soft soil, lay filter fabric and compact the crushed rock base in layers. On wet clay we add a drain line, the same perforated pipe and drain rock work you can see behind the block walls in our photos.

One Crew From Mud to Finished Surface

Turf and dog run jobs touch several trades: grading, drainage, gravel, steel edging and sometimes pavers. We do all of it ourselves, so nobody is waiting on another contractor and nobody can blame the base on someone else. The gravel side-yard paths and steel edging in our photos show the base and border work that every turf and dog run job starts with.

FAQ

Artificial Turf and Dog Run FAQs

Does artificial turf drain in Southwest Washington rain?

It does if the base is built for it. Water passes through the turf backing into the gravel, and from there it has to soak into the ground or leave through a drain. On heavy clay that stays wet all winter, we add a perforated drain under the base so the gravel never sits full of water.

Does artificial turf get hot in summer?

Yes, in direct sun it gets much hotter than grass. Penn State researchers report infill turf surfaces as hot as 93°C (about 199°F) on very hot days, and watering cools it only briefly. For dogs and kids we favor shaded spots for turf, and gravel or pavers where the afternoon sun hits hardest.

What is the best surface for a dog run?

It depends on the dog and the spot. Gravel drains fastest and is cheapest to refresh. Pet turf looks like a lawn and rinses clean but costs more and can get hot. Slab pavers in gravel are the easiest to hose off. Many runs mix two, such as pavers along the path and gravel in the corners.

How do I clean up after my dog on artificial turf?

Pick up solid waste, bag it and put it in the trash, then rinse urine areas with a hose regularly, more often in summer. Washington's Department of Ecology lists pet waste as a likely major source of bacteria in urban streams, so waste should go in the garbage, not into a storm drain.

Can artificial turf replace a shady, mossy lawn?

Often, yes. Grass needs sun, and OSU notes turf struggles on less than about 4 hours a day. Artificial turf needs none. We remove the moss and soft soil, build a draining base and lay turf. If you would rather keep real grass, our aeration and overseeding page covers shade seed options.
